How to Clean and Care for Luxury Vinyl Plank Floors
· 6 min read · By Floors To You OKC

One of the reasons luxury vinyl plank has taken over so many Oklahoma City homes is that it asks very little of you. There is no sealing, no waxing and no refinishing, ever. But "low maintenance" is not the same as "no rules". Most of the worn, dull or scratched LVP we get called out to look at was not worn out by traffic. It was worn out by grit, the wrong cleaner, or a steam mop. Here is the routine that keeps a vinyl floor looking the way it did on install day.
What you are actually protecting
Every luxury vinyl plank has the same basic build: a core underneath, a printed layer that gives it the wood or stone look, and a clear wear layer on top. The wear layer is the only part that ever touches your feet, your dog's claws or your furniture, and it is what the warranty is really about.
The core is waterproof, so ordinary cleaning cannot hurt it. Everything in this guide is about keeping the wear layer clear, smooth and free of film. Our guide to comparing luxury vinyl plank products explains how wear layers are rated if you are still choosing a floor.
Grit is the real enemy, especially in Oklahoma
Fine sand and dirt tracked in on shoes act like sandpaper under every step, and red Oklahoma dirt, dried and blown in on a windy day, is exactly that kind of fine abrasive. It does more to dull and scratch a vinyl floor than pets or kids ever will.
So the most effective care habit is not cleaning, it is keeping grit out in the first place. Put a proper mat outside and inside every exterior door, especially the one from the garage and the one the dog uses to come in from the yard. Then dry sweep, dust mop or vacuum a few times a week in the busy areas.
- ✓Vacuum on the hard-floor setting, or with the beater bar switched off
- ✓A microfiber dust mop picks up fine dust better than a broom
- ✓Shake out or vacuum door mats often, because a full mat stops working
Damp mopping: the right way
When the floor needs more than a sweep, damp mop it. Damp, not wet. A well wrung microfiber mop and warm water handle most weekly cleaning on their own. For anything stickier, use a pH-neutral cleaner made for vinyl or luxury vinyl floors, mixed as directed on the label.
Although the planks are waterproof, there is no reason to flood the floor. Puddled water sitting in a doorway or along a wall can find its way under the edges, and a damp mop cleans just as well and dries in minutes.
What not to use on LVP
Most of the damage we see on vinyl floors comes from products that seemed like a good idea. These are the ones to keep off it.
- ✓Wax, polish or "shine restorer" products, which build up a cloudy film that holds dirt
- ✓Oil soaps and oil-based wood cleaners, which leave a slippery residue
- ✓Bleach, ammonia and harsh solvents, which can dull or discolor the wear layer
- ✓Abrasive powders, scouring pads and steel wool
- ✓Steam mops, which many flooring manufacturers specifically warn against because heat and steam can work into the seams
- ✓Rubber or latex-backed rugs and mats, which can permanently stain vinyl; choose rug pads labeled safe for vinyl floors
Spills, pets and the occasional mess
Wipe spills when you see them. The core will not swell the way laminate or wood can, but sugary drinks and grease get tracked around if they are left. For a pet accident, wipe it up, clean the spot with your vinyl cleaner, and dry it. Because the surface and seams are waterproof, the accident stays on top of the floor instead of soaking into a pad the way it would with carpet. Our guide to flooring for pets, kids and high-traffic homes explains why that matters so much in a house with animals.
For scuff marks from shoes, a soft cloth with a little of your vinyl cleaner usually lifts them. Avoid the magic-eraser type sponges on a large area, because they are a mild abrasive and can leave a dull patch on a low-sheen floor.
Furniture, appliances and sunlight
Put felt pads under every chair, table and sofa leg that moves, and check them a couple of times a year, because a pad that has picked up grit becomes a scraper. Rolling office chairs need a chair mat or soft wheels made for hard floors.
When a refrigerator, washer or piano has to move, never drag it across the planks. Lay down plywood or hardboard and walk it across, or use appliance sliders. And in rooms with strong afternoon sun, close blinds or curtains during the brightest hours. Long, direct Oklahoma sunlight can fade most flooring over time, and it can make a rug-shaped outline appear when you finally move the rug.
When a plank does get damaged
A deep gouge or a plank that was hit with something heavy does not mean a new floor. On a floating click-lock installation, the damaged plank can usually be replaced on its own, provided you have matching material. That is why we suggest every homeowner keeps a spare box from the original purchase in the garage or a closet. Flooring is made in batches that vary slightly in color, and a box from the same lot is what makes a repair invisible.
If you are not sure whether a mark is a scratch in the wear layer or just residue sitting on top of it, clean the spot first with your vinyl cleaner and a soft cloth. A surprising number of "scratches" are just film.
