How to Get Your Home Ready for Flooring Installation: A Practical Checklist

Install day goes fastest in houses where a few simple things were done the evening before. None of it is complicated, and most of the heavy lifting is the crew's job, not yours. But a closet full of shoes or a gaming console still plugged in can cost an hour, and an hour can be the difference between finishing today and coming back tomorrow. Here is exactly what to do, and when.
What the crew handles, and what is on you
Start with the split, because most people assume they have to do more than they do. Our W-2 installers handle moving normal household furniture, removing and hauling away the old floor, subfloor prep, the install itself, baseboard and trim, and cleanup at the end.
What we ask of you is the small, personal stuff that nobody else should be handling.
- ✓Empty closets that are getting new flooring, floor to ceiling if things are stored on the floor
- ✓Empty dressers, bookcases and cabinets that are heavy when full
- ✓Disconnect TVs, computers, game consoles and their cables
- ✓Personally move anything fragile, valuable or irreplaceable, such as aquariums, curios, heirlooms and artwork leaning on the floor
A week or so before
If your floor is laminate, engineered wood or hardwood, the material may be delivered ahead of time so it can sit in the rooms it is going into and adjust to your home. Wood-based floors expand and contract with humidity, and Oklahoma swings hard between humid summers and dry winters. This is also the time to finish anything messy. Painting walls and ceilings, drywall repair and plumbing work should happen before the new floor goes in, not after. Paint touch-ups on baseboards can come later.
And tell us about anything unusual before install day: a refrigerator with a water line, a washer and dryer, a piano, a gun safe, or a room you need to keep usable. Those are all plannable when we know in advance, and slow when we find out on the morning.
The evening before
This is the short list that makes the biggest difference to how fast the crew can start.
- ✓Clear small items off the floor and off furniture: lamps, plants, rugs, laundry baskets, under-bed storage
- ✓Take breakables off shelves and furniture that will be moved
- ✓Unplug and disconnect electronics, and coil the cables
- ✓Empty closets in rooms being done
- ✓Take down anything delicate hanging on a wall right beside the work, since removing old flooring can shake a wall
- ✓Make sure there is parking close to the door for the crew and their truck
On install day
Have an adult at the house when the crew arrives, even if you cannot stay all day. The first few minutes are when the crew lead confirms which rooms are being done, where the floor changes direction or material, and how transitions will be handled at doorways. It is also who we need to reach if the old floor comes up and there is something underneath worth talking about, like a soft spot near a bathroom. We will show you before anything gets covered.
Keep pets and small children away from the work area. Doors will be open, tools and cut offcuts will be on the floor, and removing old flooring, especially tile, is noisy and can be dusty. A closed room, a crate, or a day at a friend's house makes everyone's life easier.
Expect noise, and expect some interior doors to come off their hinges for the day. New flooring is often a different height from the old, and a door that scraped the old carpet may need trimming to clear the new floor. We flag that at the estimate so it is not a surprise.
After the crew leaves
When you can use the floor depends on what went down. Click-lock LVP and laminate are walkable as soon as the last plank locks in. Glue-down vinyl is usually walkable that evening, with furniture rolling back the next day once the adhesive has cured. Tile needs its mortar and grout to cure before heavy traffic and before rugs go down. Before furniture goes back on a hard floor, put felt pads under every leg that moves. And put a real mat at each exterior door. Those two habits protect a new floor more than any cleaner you can buy.
