When to Replace Carpet: 7 Signs, and What Replacement Involves in OKC

Carpet does not fail all at once. It gets a little flatter in the hallway, a little darker at the doorway, and one day you notice you have been stepping around a spot for a year. Some of what looks like worn-out carpet is a fixable pad or stretch problem. Some of it is genuinely done. Here is how to tell the difference, and what replacing carpet actually involves in an Oklahoma City home.
The seven signs it is time
Most carpet in a busy household lasts eight to fifteen years, with the range decided by fiber quality, the pad underneath, pets, and how much sun and traffic it sees. Age alone is not the signal. These are.
- ✓Matting and crushing in traffic lanes that vacuuming no longer lifts, so the hallway looks like a different carpet from the bedroom it leads to
- ✓Stains that have come back after professional cleaning, which means they are in the pad, not the carpet
- ✓Odors that return within days of cleaning, almost always pet urine that has reached the pad and subfloor
- ✓Fiber that feels thin or crunchy underfoot, or bald spots where the backing shows through
- ✓Allergy symptoms that improve when you leave the house, from years of accumulated dust and dander a vacuum cannot reach
- ✓Fading or color change in sunny rooms that is now visible where furniture used to sit
- ✓A pad that has broken down, which you feel as unevenness or hear as a crunch when you walk
Ripples and wrinkles are usually a stretch problem, not a carpet problem
If your carpet has waves or ripples but the fiber itself still looks fine, it has probably loosened from the tack strip. That happens when carpet was knee-kicked instead of power-stretched at install, or after heavy furniture has been dragged across it for years. Restretching is a real service and it is far cheaper than replacement.
The honest test: if the carpet is under about eight years old, the pile looks even and the problem is only the ripples, ask about restretching first. If the ripples come with matting, stains and odor, the stretch is the least of it.
The pad is often what actually failed
Builder-grade carpet in a newer Oklahoma City home is frequently installed over a thin, low-density pad that breaks down in five to seven years. When it does, the carpet above it starts to look worn even though the fiber has life left. You feel it as flat spots and hear it as a crunch.
If the carpet is otherwise sound, replacing only the pad and restretching the existing carpet is sometimes an option, and it is worth asking about. Pet damage: when cleaning is not enough
Pet urine is the most common reason carpet gets replaced before its time. Once it reaches the pad and the subfloor, no surface cleaning reaches it, and the odor returns every humid Oklahoma summer. Replacement in that case means more than new carpet: the old pad comes out, the subfloor is cleaned and sealed where needed, and a new moisture-barrier pad goes down so the next accident stays on top.
