What Carpet Installation Actually Costs in OKC (and What's Included)

Carpet samples being compared in an Oklahoma City home

Two carpet quotes for the same house can differ by thousands of dollars, and the cheaper one is not always the better deal. The reason is that carpet pricing bundles at least six separate things, and different companies bundle them differently. Once you know what the six are, comparing bids gets easy.

What should be on the quote

A complete carpet estimate covers all of the following. If a line is missing, it is not free, it is either buried in another line or it will appear later as a change order.

  • The carpet itself, priced per square foot or square yard
  • The pad, specified by type and thickness, not just listed as pad
  • Removal and disposal of the existing carpet and pad
  • Tack strip, including replacement where the old strip is corroded
  • Labor, including furniture moving and power-stretching
  • Transitions at every doorway where carpet meets another floor
  • Stairs, always priced separately, per tread

The pad is where cheap quotes hide

The pad is the line homeowners skim and installers know it. It is invisible once the carpet is down, which makes it the easiest place to shave a bid without the customer noticing until year three.

What the pad actually does is absorb compression. Every footstep either crushes the pad or crushes the carpet fiber, and fiber does not recover. A good carpet on a cheap pad develops a visible traffic lane years earlier than the same carpet on a proper pad, and many carpet warranties are explicitly void if the pad does not meet a minimum spec.

When you compare two quotes, find the pad on both. If one specifies density and thickness and the other just says pad included, you are not comparing the same job.

Why stairs cost what they cost

Every homeowner is surprised by stair pricing, and it is worth explaining rather than defending. A staircase is not measured in meaningful square feet. It is a series of individually cut and wrapped pieces, each of which has to be tight, aligned, and consistent with the one above it. A fourteen-step staircase is a genuine half day of skilled labor.

There is also a style choice that changes the price. Waterfall, where the carpet flows over the nose of each tread, is faster and cheaper. Cap-and-band, where the carpet wraps under the nose and follows the stair profile, looks noticeably better and costs more.

Fiber is the biggest lever on material cost

Nylon costs more than polyester and holds up longer, particularly in high-traffic areas and homes with pets. Polyester is softer and takes color beautifully, and in a low-traffic bedroom it is often the smarter spend. Our guide to choosing carpet in Oklahoma City walks through fiber, pile, and twist in detail.

The practical version: spend on nylon where the traffic is, save on polyester where it is not. Putting the same premium carpet in a guest bedroom that goes in the family room is money that does nothing for you.

What can move the number after the quote

Two things legitimately change a price mid-job, and both should be shown to you before anything gets covered up.

The first is subfloor damage that was invisible under the old carpet, usually a soft spot near a bathroom, a water heater, or an exterior wall. The second is old tack strip that has corroded and cannot hold tension. Neither is optional, and neither is something an honest installer discovers and quietly ignores.

How to compare two bids fairly

Get both to the same scope. Same fiber, same pad spec, same square footage, same stair treatment, both including removal and disposal. Then compare the installed total, not the price per square foot and not the monthly payment.

And ask one question that separates crews quickly: do you power-stretch? Carpet that is only knee-kicked into place ripples within a year or two, and re-stretching a room later costs real money. What Carpet Installation Actually Costs in OKC (and What's Included) — FAQ

What is included in a carpet installation quote? +

A complete quote covers the carpet, the pad specified by type and thickness, removal and disposal of the old carpet and pad, tack strip, transitions at doorways, and labor including furniture moving and power-stretching. Stairs are priced separately per tread.

Why are stairs quoted separately from the rest of the house? +

Because a staircase is individually cut and wrapped piece by piece rather than rolled out. Each tread and riser is its own small job, so a fourteen-step staircase is roughly a half day of skilled labor regardless of the square footage involved.

Does the carpet pad really change the price much? +

It is a modest share of the total and a large share of how long the carpet lasts. A cheap pad lets foot traffic crush the carpet fiber, which produces a visible traffic lane years early, and it can void the carpet manufacturer warranty.

What is power-stretching and why does it matter? +

Power-stretching uses a tool that pulls carpet tight across the room and hooks it onto the tack strip under real tension. Carpet installed with only a knee kicker looks fine at first and develops ripples and buckles within a year or two, which requires coming back to re-stretch the entire room.
