The Best Flooring for Bedrooms: Carpet, LVP, Laminate or Wood?
· 7 min read · By Floors To You OKC

Most rooms in a house are chosen for toughness: the kitchen has to handle water, the entry has to handle mud, the living room has to handle everyone. Bedrooms are different. They get light, barefoot traffic, almost no spills, and the first thing your feet touch every morning is the floor. That changes the priorities. Here is how the main options compare in a bedroom, and how we help Oklahoma City homeowners choose for the primary bedroom, the kids' rooms and the guest room.
What a bedroom floor actually has to do
Start with how the room is used, not with what is popular. A bedroom floor is walked on barefoot, so warmth and softness matter more than in any other room. It needs to be quiet, especially in a two-story house or when someone is asleep while another person is up. And it should not be hard to keep clean, because dust collects under beds and dressers.
What a bedroom usually does not need is waterproofing. Unless the room has an attached bath with no door, a pet that has accidents, or a child young enough to spill in it, water resistance is less important here than almost anywhere else in the house.
Carpet: still the comfort choice
Carpet remains the most popular bedroom floor for good reasons. It is warm underfoot on a January morning, it is soft for kids playing on the floor, it absorbs sound instead of bouncing it around the room, and it is usually the most affordable way to floor a bedroom. Plush and textured styles feel the softest; a good pad under them matters as much as the carpet itself, and our carpet pad guide explains how to choose one.
The tradeoffs are cleaning and allergies. Carpet holds dust and pet hair until it is vacuumed out, and it needs vacuuming and professional cleaning on a schedule. In pet households, the pet-rated SmartStrand, PetProof and LifeProof carpet lines we stock carry lifetime pet stain and odor warranties, and a moisture barrier pad keeps accidents from soaking through. Our guide to choosing carpet in Oklahoma City covers fibers and styles.
Luxury vinyl plank: easy care, with a rug
Luxury vinyl plank has become a common bedroom choice, especially where the same floor runs from the living areas down the hall into the bedrooms. It is waterproof, resists scratches from furniture and pets, and is very easy to keep clean, since dust and hair sweep or vacuum right off. For people with dust or pet allergies, that easy cleaning is a real advantage.
It is cooler and firmer underfoot than carpet, and a hard floor makes a room sound livelier. An attached underlayment helps with both, and a large area rug under the bed gives you a soft landing for your feet while keeping the rest of the floor easy to clean.
Laminate and wood: the warm look of real wood
Laminate gives a realistic wood look at a lower price than real wood, and it handles the light traffic of a bedroom easily. Its main drawback in wet rooms, sensitivity to standing water, rarely matters in a bedroom. A quality underlayment keeps it from sounding hollow when you walk across it.
Hardwood and engineered wood are the classic choice for a primary bedroom when you want real wood throughout the house. Bedrooms are an easy place for wood: little grit, few spills, and mostly bare or socked feet. Most Oklahoma City homes are built on a slab, where engineered wood is usually the right way to get real wood. Our guide to hardwood vs. luxury vinyl compares the two head to head.
Upstairs bedrooms and noise
In a two-story house, footsteps on a bedroom floor are heard in the room below. Carpet with a good pad is the quietest option by a wide margin. If you want a hard floor upstairs, choose a product with an attached acoustic underlayment or add one rated for sound, and plan on rugs in the main walking areas. It is worth asking about at the estimate, because the underlayment has to be chosen before the floor goes down.
Choosing by bedroom
Not every bedroom in the house has to get the same floor. Here is how we usually see it play out in Oklahoma City homes.
- ✓Primary bedroom: plush carpet for comfort, or the same LVP or wood as the main living areas for a continuous look, with a large rug under the bed
- ✓Kids’ bedrooms: stain-resistant carpet for floor play and naps, or LVP where spills, crafts and pets are part of daily life
- ✓Nursery: soft carpet or LVP with a large rug, chosen with easy cleaning in mind
- ✓Guest room: the most budget-friendly floor that matches the rest of the house, since it sees the least traffic
- ✓Bedroom that doubles as an office: a hard floor, or a chair mat over carpet, so a rolling chair does not wear a path
