Laminate Flooring Installation in OKC: What Happens on Install Day

Laminate is the floor people are most tempted to install themselves, which tells you how straightforward the basic idea is: planks click together and float on an underlayment. The details are where it goes wrong. The gap at the wall, the undercut at the door, the flatness of the slab and the moisture reading nobody took are what decide whether a laminate floor is still tight in ten years. Here is what a professional laminate installation looks like in an Oklahoma City home.
What laminate is, in one paragraph
Laminate is a high-density fiberboard core with a printed wood or stone image on top, sealed under a clear wear layer. That wear layer is the hardest surface of any floor we sell, which is why laminate resists scratches so well, and the fiberboard core is the reason standing water is its one weakness. Modern laminate is water-resistant for 24 to 72 hours, which handles spills that get wiped up but not a leak that runs overnight. The subfloor check
A floating floor bridges nothing. Every dip in the slab under a laminate plank becomes a spot that flexes, and a flexing plank eventually breaks the locking edge and opens a seam. So the first step, before any plank comes out of the box, is a flatness check. High spots are ground down and low spots are filled with a floor patch or self-leveler.
On concrete we also take a moisture reading, because laminate's fiberboard core swells from below just as readily as from above. A vapor barrier goes under the underlayment when the slab calls for it. On wood subfloors we fix squeaks and soft spots while they are exposed. Going over an existing floor
Laminate can float over existing tile, sheet vinyl or plywood as long as the surface is flat, intact and dry, and that saves the cost and mess of demolition. Wide grout lines in old tile are filled so they do not telegraph through. Laminate should not go over carpet, cushioned vinyl or another floating floor.
Adding a floor on top of a floor raises the height, so we check door clearance, the gap under kitchen appliances, and the transition to adjacent rooms before recommending it. A dishwasher that fits today can be trapped under a countertop by a new floor installed in front of it.
Acclimation
Laminate's core is wood fiber, and wood fiber moves with humidity. The cartons sit in the room they are going into for about 48 hours at normal living temperature before installation. Oklahoma's swing from humid summer to dry winter makes this matter: planks installed straight from a hot truck in August shrink and gap in January, and planks installed cold in winter swell and peak in summer.
Underlayment, the gap and the jambs
Three details separate a professional laminate install from a rushed one.
- ✓Underlayment: laminate floats on an attached pad or a rolled underlayment that cushions the floor, quiets footsteps and, with a vapor barrier, protects the core from slab moisture
- ✓The expansion gap: a 3/8-inch gap at every wall and fixed object, covered by baseboard or quarter round that is fastened to the wall, never through the floor. Without it, summer expansion has nowhere to go and the floor peaks at the seams
- ✓Undercut door jambs: the casing is cut so the plank slides beneath it rather than being cut around it. Our crews also transition cleanly to existing flooring and protect baseboards, so shoe-mold is not needed to hide gaps
Laying the floor
Layout comes first: which wall to start on, which direction the planks run, and where the cuts will land so a sliver of plank does not end up along a visible wall. End joints are staggered so seams do not line up row to row. Planks click together and are tapped home with a tapping block, never a bare hammer. Long runs get a T-molding at the interval the manufacturer requires, and every doorway gets a transition strip that lets each room move on its own.

Living with it afterward
Sweep or vacuum on a hard-floor setting, damp-mop with a laminate-safe cleaner, and never use a steam mop; forcing hot vapor into the seams is the one thing that damages modern laminate. Wipe up standing water within a few hours. Put felt pads under furniture and a mat at every exterior door. A properly installed AC4 laminate floor should last 20 to 30 years in a typical Oklahoma City home.
